How Furniture Liquidation Supports ESG Targets

How Furniture Liquidation Supports ESG Targets

Most sustainability reports treat office furniture as an afterthought next to energy and travel. That's a mistake. A single floor decommission generates measurable, easily documented diversion data, and it's one of the few Scope 3 categories a facilities team can influence directly through vendor choice alone.

Landfill diversion rate is the number that matters most. It's calculated as the percentage of total asset weight or unit count that avoids landfill through resale, donation, or materials recycling. A liquidation partner should report this per project, not as an annual average, since it varies with asset condition and market demand.

Documentation is where most vendors fall short. For a diversion figure to hold up in an ESG report, you need item-level tracking: what was resold, what was donated and to whom, and what was recycled and through which certified processor. Ask for this before signing a contract, not after the trucks have left.

Scope 3 reporting frameworks increasingly ask for downstream disposition detail, not just a diversion percentage. If your liquidation partner can't tell you where an asset went after pickup, the number they're giving you probably won't survive an audit.
